Interview | Undergravity: The Underdawgs

Some Moe Funk” is my FAVORITE song on The Underdawgs From Undergravity. Undergravity is giving us a raw insight into double cup love & paying homage to Big Moe at the same [damn] time.

Big Moe was a rapper in Houston & an original member of the Screwed Up Click.  He passed away in 2007 from a heart attack.  It’s speculated that too much consumption of drank over years may have contributed to his heart attack.  See Drake & Kirko don’t tell you about that shit.  Growing up in Abilene the only Big Moe songs I heard were “Barre Baby” & “Mann.”  I’m still catching up on my Houston rap history in my Screwed Up Click course with Queen Bobbi.  So far I probably have a C.

“Can’t drink it if it’s runny, only if it’s muddy. Started in the slums of Houston  then exposed it to the public. It’s funny to see the whole world double cuppin’. But I love ya. Big Moe tell ‘em somethin’.”

My other favorites on The Underdawgs From Undergravity are “Midnight Sunshine,” “Underdawgs From Undergravity,” & “Paystyle.”

I decided to spend a Sunday with Undergravity and the rest of the Space Age Fam to have a little Q&A session.  Here are some of the highlights of the interview.

LongHornBrit: When did these Sunday dinners begin?
Mac: Sunday dinners started with my grandmother.  She used to cook every Sunday.  She had a stroke about 10 years ago so after that my aunt started cooking every Sunday.  Every Sunday we have a meat & 2 sides.  We always have cabbage & yams as the 2 sides.  We just use Sunday dinner to talk about what happened during the week.  You know laugh, cry, rank on each other.

(I got to enjoy the meal with them & it was definitely the bomb.com!)

Tell me your funniest memory from childhood. [Mac & Adam were born a couple of days a part as planned by their mothers who are best friends.  These 2 are practically brothers so I knew there was a good laugh in there somewhere.]
Mac: For [Adam's] 4th birthday he had this fake as Michael Jackson, pulled up in a limo & everything.

Adam: He said four. Remember he said four.

Mac: I’m like man that’s not Michael Jackson. My mama kept dragging me like man don’t tell him that ain’t Michael Jackson. Don’t spoil his dreams.

Adam: It wasn’t my dream to have Michael Jackson. I was four. [Mac] didn’t even enjoy himself because he was too busy hating & talking about this ain’t Michael Jackson. The man is dancing & all this shit, he’s doing everything. He’s entertaining us. [Mac] ain’t trying to be entertained because he too busy worrying about if this man is the real Mike. He was giving out glasses & gloves & shit.

So who was the guy?
Adam: I don’t know.

Mac: He said his name was Leroy.

Adam: You were investigating that much?

Mac: Man I asked my mama & I asked your mama. They paid the nigga. I wanted to know who they were paying.

So I think it’s safe to say that The King of Pop influenced Undergravity early on, but what local rappers/DJ’s do you credit for inspiration?
Adam: For DJ I’m gonna say DJ Screw & rapper is Fat Pat. *cue Heart Of A Hustla*

Mac: I second that notion. Screwed Up Click has a major influence on us. As far as Screw, we learned how to DJ just by listening to Screw tapes. Nobody ever sat down & said hey this is what you’re supposed to do. We mimicked every scratch, every beat, tempo, pitch, everything. We owe a lot of Screw. RIP Screw, Big Moe. We got a song on our new CD dedicated to Big Moe. Those guys has a lot of influence on us.

If you guys could add a third member to Undergravity, who would it be?
Mac: I’m gonna let [Adam] go. He’s going to say something stupid.

Alright Adam it’s on you.
Adam: Barack Obama. Put Barack Obama in the group! Man we’ll be live, presidential.

*laughter*

What’s one word you would use to describe The Underdawgs From Undergravity?
Mac: Funky. Not saying that we’re the best rappers or the best lyricists, but you can’t deny that funk.

Adam: I wanna say heavy man. It represents how we’re coming man. *cue Gucci*

What’s up next for you guys?
Adam: We got the Steel Curtain coming & it’s going to be live. Double LP with a bunch of features. It’s going to be some gumbo, some funky gumbo.

“I just want people to stop going with the ‘in’ crowd. Just because it’s in don’t mean it’s what it is.” You can catch Undergravity on Twitter: @MACundrgravity & @AComb_Undrgrvty.
